CAMPER NICHOLSON 45 -
WETHERLY

Wetherley is a Nicholson 45 built in 1972 in Gosport, England by Camper and Nicholson. Wetherley is hull number 6 of 8 built to this design.

The first owner raced her in Cowes. She was then sold to a syndicate of 6 Scotsman and based in the Mediterranean.

In 1988 the current owners bought her in Majorca and sailed her to Portsmouth. She received new sails and an engine, and then cruised the south of England and across to France with their 4 children. 1991 left Portsmouth with the children, with the intention of sailing around the world. They arrived in New Zealand in November 1992 where she has stayed ever since.

The layout is 3 cabins with the galley located on the starboard side (a safe and functional galley for ocean crossings). There is a proper navigation station to port and lots of storage in cupboards and under seats.

The keel is encapsulated and the water tanks have large screw down inspection hatches. She has a solid engine with smooth hydraulic transmission linkage. She is a lovely mix of old solid strong design with a modern and functional refit.

The mainsail is easy to hoist, almost to the top by hand. The winches have been lovingly serviced and 1 set of winches is the new style harken. There are lots of modern pulleys and running rigging. She has a great inventory of sails for cruising and/or racing.

In 2006 – 2009 Wetherley had a major refit undercover. “We re-modelled the saloon, fitted new electrics and plumbing, bought a second-hand engine, removed all deck fittings, laid new teak decks, painted the coach roof, had new upholstery and vinyl lining and varnished the teak woodwork down below. The hull was stripped, epoxied below the waterline and antifouled. The topsides were sanded and painted.” Detailed the owner.

They have since cruised extensively between the Bay of Islands and Napier. Wetherley has twice won her division in the Bay of Islands Sailing Week and has also come first in the Russell Tall Ships Race and has regularly raced at the Opua Cruising Club.

2019 the owners took Wetherley off shore for 5 months to Vanuatu and New Caledonia.

She is on a mooring off Tapu Point in the Bay of Islands. The owners are ready to pass her on to a new family.

She has been lovingly looked after refitted maintained and is in great working condition.

A diver has just cleaned the hull in July 2024 and she is booked to come out of the water 23rd September 2024 for a fresh coat of anti-foul (This would be a great time to have a surveyor inspect the boat on your behalf.).
